Austria
Austria’s Health Minister Rudolf Anschober has announced his resignation. He is pulling the “emergency brake”, Anschober said at a “personal statement” scheduled at short notice in Vienna. He is the Green Party’s flagship minister, 60 years old.

Johnson & Johnson was actually supposed to play a crucial role in Austria’s vaccination strategy. In early March, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) had called for rapid approval of the vaccine. In a joint letter to the EU from the heads of state of the Czech Republic, Denmark, Greece and Austria, the vaccine was described as a “game changer”. Unlike other vaccines, Johnson & Johnson requires only one vaccination. In addition, the U.S. vaccine can be stored more easily.
In Austria, where nearly nine million people live, around 1.5 million people are currently vaccinated at least once. Slightly more than 630,000 people are considered fully immunized. Austria is thus slightly ahead of Germany in terms of vaccination rate. 16.9 percent of first-time vaccinations were carried out, compared with 16.2 percent.
